A day trip to Cape Point
Friday, 16 February 2007
(http://www.capepoint.co.za/) It looks as gorgeous as the pictures. On route to the park we hit a traffic jam. There was a huge tour bus and people pulled over to the side of the road. There were baboons just hanging out, not planning to budge for anyone. Saul quickly said, “roll up your windows, lock the doors!” We sat there and watched the five-foot baboons wander about. A German couple behind us decided that it would be a good idea to get out of their car to take some pictures. A baboon just hoped right in their car and searched around for some food. The gave a poor attempt to coax him out. The guy was standing in front of the only open door and sticking his hand in… um yeah… he was lucky he didn’t get bit. So the gal got clever and opened up another door. Then the baboon got out. The gal closed the back door and turned to get onto the passenger seat. The baboon opened the back door and got back in! So they got the baboon out again, they both got into the car, and yes, the baboon opened the door again and hopped back in. The couple finally smartened up. They got out of the care, got the baboon out, again, and then locked all of the car doors (thank goodness for central locking systems!) They got back in the car and then realized that the baboon had snatched their money belt and was proceeding to tear it apart looking for food. They some how managed to get it back and the baboon went on to terrorize another group of people. At first I felt a bit guilty staring at this helpless couple, but it was too comical. I couldn’t believe my eyes! As traffic started to move I looked back. A big gust of wind came by and blew the guy’s hat right off his head. He went off to chase it, leaving his door open.... “Oh no” I thought, “don’t leave the door open!” We drove off before I see what happened next. Lets hope the couple managed to get in and lock their doors before another baboon came to visit! Once we got to Cape Point we saw plenty of more baboons and hiked to the lighthouse. The view was spectacular. Cape Point is the place where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. It was a strange sensation to be standing on the other side of the Atlantic. As a child I had spent my summers on the shores of Maryland and the Carolina’s. The ocean here is clear and very blue. There was a beach we stopped at that day called Boulders. You pay a small fee and hang out on the beach with heaps of cute little penguins. When you talk to them they cock their heads to the side and make a little “huurrup” sounds. Very cute. I’m tempted to check out a safari while I’m here. There are hundreds off places that offer some incredible (and incredibly expensive) three day trips. I’m still undecided, but it sounds fun. As long as the doors and locked and windows roll up. Baboons I can handle… but lions, cheetahs, and hyenas???
