Rain Rain GO AWAY!!!

Monday, 06 November 2006

Ah yes, the rain, it’s back. It brought in the fog and mist too. I drove over Arthur’s Pass today. Which is supposed to be a most specular sight to see. However, the clouds were far too thick to see much of anything and I had to look at the windy road anyway to keep from flying off the edge. Occasionally I would stop and try to see the view. The clouds would pass by and tease me with a peek of a snow capped mountain. I have only been in the rolling farmlands so far, the mountains here are quiet high and steep! I decided to check into a lodge to dry off and regroup. (http://www.flockhill.co.nz/) It’s a cute place, and Anna the desk gal was sweet enough to let me use the internet and even brought me a beer! Kiwi service, you gotta love it. Yesterday was magical. I went to a climbing spot in the little town of Charleston. The cliffs are gorgeous, lots of crack climbing, yay! With this place you have to time everything just right. The waves literally crash onto the lower half of the wall. The belayer could get sucked off to sea, maybe even the climber too! I looked down from the top and observed the bolt anchors and the routes below them. I wished that I had a climbing buddy with me ..... and that it was sunny and warm. But, it wasn’t gonna happen, so I got over it. I went on exploring. There were a lot of fun muddy trails with over grown ferns and palms. Later that day I hiked into the national forest just outside of town. It was so awesome. The forest was very dense. There were many times I had to duck underneath branches and go around vines. It was a trail more for a hobbit than a 5’5 gal. The trees were covered in moss and the river was a deep orange-red color. The trail got steep and dead ended at this enormous cave. I walked in and snapped a few shots into the darkness. The flash lit up some cool formations. I sat there and meditated for a long time, until I felt at peace and comfortable with the forest around me. As the light faded I headed back to my car and fell asleep in my warm sleeping bag listening to the pitter-patter of the rain on the metal roof of my car. I dreamed about scuba diving and white water rafting through a huge cave. I was greeted with a few friend’s along the way… Katie and her mom Jane, Carolyn Arnold, Jay, and my brother Dan.
