Christmas in the Tropics

Monday, 01 January 2007

The people in Cairns know how to party. Especially went Christmas is involved. BBQ’s galore. I managed to have two days of Christmas in just one day. Here is how you do it. You start by waking up at 9 am and drinking vodka and lemonade. Then you get picked up in a hot blue convertible, go swimming in a salt water pool with blue tiles and various ceramic statues placed about the yard. I really liked the little green frogs. Then you play some music, eat some delicious seafood and pass out on a living room floor spread eagle exhausted from indulgence. Be sure to protect your head by placing in near a low piece of furniture so your face doesn’t get stepped on. You wake up, embarrassed but refreshed for your second round of Christmas. Onto the next BBQ where there is more drinking, more seafood, yet another pool and more lovin’ folks. I must say I’m proud of myself for sticking it out. I did my absolute best to keep up with these crazy Aussie’s. It’s not an easy task! Boxing day, the 26th was hot, very very hot. Me and a fellow Dale decided to see more of the surrounding countryside. Why not do it on a motorcycle? We went swimming in a mountain lake, cruised through some mango groves and winded our way through the mountains. We were fortunate enough to find a spa/resort that had this amazing swimming pool. It was surrounded by rocks that were fun to climb on. The water was deep enough too so one could jump off the rocks. There was a waterfall you could swim under and a ledge behind it to sit on. The other half of the pool had a sandy bottom and a hot tub. The surrounding forest was tropical and there were little bungalows the guests stayed in. I could have stayed there for ages, but we had to get back to town. I was ready to leave on the 27th. Cairns was fun, but I can only handle so much fun. I was eager to get back down south so I could swim the ocean again and see a familiar face.
