I’m all the way up here on the east coast of Australia. This town is hot, it’s got a nice lagoon to hang out in during the day, and at night it knows how to party. While most of the backpackers headed to the clubs and dance halls… I decided to go to the local dive bar Johno. It was a sight to see Johno up there on stage. I think he started drinking at 8am that morning and partied little too hard in the 70’s. He wore this Hawaiian shirt and a black hat with red sequins on it and a purple feather. On Sunday nights they have the Gong Show, kind of like an open mic thing. I was the first one up and I played “One Of A Kind”. It was funny to see their reaction to my song. They aren’t used to the southern twang. Then I played Rocky Raccoon with the band and had a good time jammin out. I didn’t know the rules of the show but you get rated right afterward, I felt like I was on American Idle. The crowd screamed out some 9’s and 10’s and I got off the stage. The next contestant was a 10 year old kid that rocked out on “Johnny Be Good”. Some guys with mohawks were playing air guitar and thrashing around. Then Johno jumped in on the guitar and mic and kinda messed things up and the rest of the band got mad. Next thing you know they were all hooting and hollering telling each other to shut-up. I just shook my head in disbelief, it was a quite a scene. I thought about sticking around to see what the prizes were for the contest. Johno said first place gets one punch, second gets two and third gets three. So I guess one punch is better than three even though first place is getting less than third… I decided to leave before the Gong Show finished just in case I won something.
